Gold & Silver Smash & What Soros & Major Players Are Doing

The mainstream headline says George Soros is selling his GLD position.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-05-19/gold-bear-bets-reach-record-as-soros-cuts-holdings-commodities.html

Yet, underneath the surface, Soros is also doing this.

Is he hedging?  Absolutely.  But he's betting, along with fellow heavyweights John Paulson and Stevie Cohen, that the gold miners--and by association, gold--will rise soon.

Soros Adds to Gold Miner ETF Positions, Raises GLD Stake

George Soros is the same billionaire who declared gold as the ultimate bubble asset a few years ago.  Yet, he keeps accumulating.  Head fake, anyone?  Buy low, right?

Soros 1Q Filing: Ramped Up Gold ETF, Dropped Google, Bought JPMorgan

George Soros' fund quadrupled its gold ETF holdings last quarter--despite Soros declaring "The ultimate asset bubble is gold" in 2010.  "Do as I do, not as I say," is the take-away message, I guess.

Soros Increased Stake in SPDR Gold Trust in Fourth Quarter

In the "Do as I do, not as I say" category, 13F filings reveal George Soros increased his gold holdings last quarter--despite declaring gold was topping last year.  I hope the anti-gold crowd feels stupid.  They may not be stupid--just easily hoodwinked by head fakes.

Reversal of Fortune: Soros Said to Buy Gold Again Late Last Year

And speaking of head fakes to hoodwink retail investors out of their winning positions, after declaring gold was the "ultimate bubble" asset--helping cause the decline in gold prices, it appears George Soros jumped right back in and bought gold at its lows late last year.

It's the oldest trick in the snooker playbook:  incite fear by talking down the asset you want to buy at lower prices.  And when the price plummets, load up the truck and buy said asset at a discount.

By the way, Soros closed his fund down and redeemed client funds last year--he is no longer managing other people's money (OPM).  He is only managing family money.

Soros Says a Euro Exit Mechanism Is ‘Probably Inevitable’ Amid Debt Crisis

It took Soros a while to figure it out, but his conclusion is spot on.  The Euro itself may become extinct.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-06-26/soros-says-euro-member-exit-mechanism-is-probably-inevitable-amid-crisis.html
Billionaire investor George Soros said it’s “probably inevitable” that a mechanism will be put in place to allow weaker economies to exit the euro.

“There’s no arrangement for any countries leaving the euro, which in current circumstances is probably inevitable,” Soros, 80, said at a panel discussion in Vienna yesterday on whether liberal democracy is at risk in Europe. “We are on the verge of an economic collapse which starts, let’s say, in Greece, but it could easily spread. The financial system remains extremely vulnerable.”

Soros reiterates gold as the ultimate bubble

He declared gold is the "ultimate bubble" in January, and reiterates that sentiment today. Problem is, his fund loaded up on gold and gold-related assets last December. Is he talking down his book? You decide.

http://uk.reuters.com/article/idUKTRE68E3PX20100915

In the video, he declares gold is the ultimate bubble destined to "disappoint" investors, yet he admits gold has been the best-performing asset in his funds in 2010. He could have said gold was the best-performing asset class for the last 10 years, and still have been correct.

Soros and gold revisited

I had blogged about George Soros' head fake on gold earlier. Here is another article on his comments regarding "gold as the ultimate asset bubble," and how his message was misconstrued.
