Crops would be a good store of value also, but they rot. A barrel of crude oil would be a good hedge against inflation and USDollar debasement also, but it's difficult (as well as dangerous and probably illegal) to store in your garage--and you can't put it in your pocket and bug out if the $hit were to hit the fan.
Stick with gold and silver coins and bars.

Rush to Use Crops as Fuel Raises Food Prices and Hunger Fears
I've been saying this for a long time: misguided mandates on biofuels will trigger food shortages, soaring commodities prices, and increase world hunger. I've also said the overarching motivation for social unrest isn't just to overthrow oppressive dictatorships. The main motivation is lack of food. Thanks to Kitty for finding this article.

"Transitory" Inflation Tally: Gold, Corn Record Highs, Silver 31 Year High, Brent 2.5 Year High

Bottom line: if yes QE3: gold goes to $2,000. If no QE3, gold drops to $1,200, then jumps way beyond $2,000 following the deflationary tsunami that will flood the world, crash markets, and push the Fed's hand for one last expoeriment in failed voodoo economics.
