Bullion smuggling outstrips narcotics to feed gold habit

http://in.reuters.com/article/2013/12/04/india-gold-smuggling-idINDEE9B20HY20131204

Though the number of arrests made in India has increased, those that get caught are usually only the "carriers" who transport gold for as little as 10,000 rupees. The people behind the smuggling are rarely identified.

In an effort to change that, Mumbai customs offers a reward of up to 50,000 rupees per kg of bullion seized for informers in gold smuggling cases. Cocaine and heroin informers get only up to 40,000 rupees and 20,000 rupees respectively.

Fraud Confirmed: 100-Day Delay To Take Bullion Delivery In London

This would be a good article, except the author confuses the London Metal Exchange (which deals in industrial metals) <click here> with the London Bullion Market Association (which guarantees good delivery of gold and silver) <click here>.

He correctly calls the 100-day delivery delay at the LME as a default, but that doesn't have anything to do with the dwindling inventory of gold and silver in London and New York, although also true.

China Approves Gold-Backed ETPs as Domestic Buyers Chase Bullion

This will go one of two ways:

1) these new Chinese ETP's will just be vehicles for more price manipulation of paper gold,

2) this is further evidence that the Chinese want to accumulate physical gold at lower prices, and eventually backing the yuan with gold.

I guess there's a third scenario:  all of the above.

JPMorgan takes gold collateral, inflation in focus

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/02/07/us-jpmorgan-gold-idUSTRE7162SG20110207

J.P. Morgan Chase said on Monday it would accept physical gold as collateral with its counterparties as a growing number of clients look to use bullion as a hedge against inflation.

Good luck on JPMorgan returning clients' bullion when the proverbial crap hits the fan.

GoldNomics - Cash or Gold Bullion?

Readers of my blog have been inundated for the last two years on my rants about the merits of sound monetary policy, and the role gold and silver play as part of that policy.  Viewing this 4-minute video would have saved you all that time.  Of course, this video was produced two years later...but better late than never.  Having said that, early adopters have made some sizable gains, and I expect, will continue to profit.  See disclaimers in the side bar.  See previous disclosures on precious metals.  Perform your own due diligence.

Ted Butler on the shortage in physical silver

The physical shortage in silver will precede a run in gold. I may be a gold bug, but I'm even more bullish on silver.

Disclosure: long gold and silver mining shares

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

A hunch...

Shares in gold and silver mining companies are surging higher today, even though the spot price of gold bullion has increased moderately. We'll see if this is a precursor to higher prices for both. See disclaimers on sidebar.

Disclosure: long precious metals and mining companies.
